Atom in a box
Atom in a Box is an application that aids in visualizing the Hydrogenic atomic orbitals, a prime and otherwise unwieldy example of quantum mechanics. Unlike other tools in this category, this program raytraces through a three-dimensional cloud density that represents the wavefunction's probability density and presents its results in real-time (up to 48 frames per second on the latest hardware). The user interface is very interactive and provides a wide degree of flexibility. Our Review: Atom in a Box will be a real boon to all you Quantum Physicists out there! Now you can view phase and probability states for a variety of combinations of n,l, and m energy levels. A 3D model of the atom is presented within the Orbital Window and is updated at customisable sample-rates as it spins happily on its axes. Atom in a Box can even be run in screen-saver mode and can also output its 3D model into a PICS file for use in lecture presentations.
