Napster is a program for microsoft windows 95/98/NT which makes finding and sharing MPEG-1, layer 3 (MP3) type files easier than ever. During the initial setup process, each user's collection of MP3 files is placed in his/her library, and when logged on to the napster server, that library is added to the database. The napster client integrates chat (both in channels and in private), database searching, library browsing (both locally and remotely), a feedback form, an mp3 player and more!
Our Review: Everyone must know what Napster is by now. But those of you who don't, Napster is the excellent file-sharing utility that revolutionised the online file-swapping community. Its rock solid stability, ease of use, decent downloading speed and huge amount of files on offer mean that if you are into music in any way you have to get your hands on this puppy. Beta 9 is the latest version and looks identical to the previous version except for two additional features/options. The first one lets you do a simple search by generally searching for file names or you can turn the advance search on by choosing the connection speed and quality of music found. This advance feature was made optional - perhaps to make the interface a little bit more user-friendly for first timers -but after while you probably won't turn this feature off anyway. Secondly, there is a new button on top saying "Shop for music at CDNOW". Napster also has improved connectivity and the old problem of being cut off at random seems to have disappeared.
