Audiotools
Audiotools is a direct-to-disk recorder - that is, a program which can record straight to hard disk without having to use much memory. This allows the recording of much longer samples than can usually fit in RAM (32Mb of RAM can only hold 3 minutes of audio and many programs cannot even record this much). It can split a recording into separate tracks, either by silence detection or under manual control. Any recordings which are already on your hard-disk can be automatically split or "auditioned" to manually split them. This is considerably faster than a graphical approach and can be happily left unattended in "auto-track" mode. A variety of effects can be applied such as LMS / De-noise noise reduction (for reducing tape hiss), parametric equalisation (a more advanced version of the graphic on your hi-fi) and sample rate conversion. Sounds can be written to CD or can be saved as .WAV files in either PCM uncompressed format, compressed formats using Microsoft's Audio Compression Manager or other formats available through plugins (AU,AIFF,MP3). Further formats will be available later. Since version 3.0 support has been added for custom skins and plugins for further audio processing and file support. Improvements have been made to make it as easy as possible to do standard tasks without limiting the capacity for doing much more than other similarly priced programs. Wizard plugins have been added to automate and simplify the application. Our Review: Handy little accessory for transferring your audio collection directly onto your hard-drive. There's a good 'auto ear' feature which greatly simplifies things and the help file goes beyond the call of duty in the background information it supplies. Process features available are definitely not studio quality and the interface isn't as rock-solid as you'd hope, but it's still a nice piece of software for the home user. If you're a beginner interested in computer audio, this program is worth a download for the help alone.
