Waitrose - Waiter's Weekly Roster

This program was written to help a friend draw up the weekly roster for the waiters at the restaurant where she works. It is designed to be used at places with a large number of staff, with many of them being unavailable for specific shifts. It will handle up to 40 staff, and has facilities for marking shifts that staff are permanently unable to work, one-off shifts that they can't work as well as extended periods during which they can't work, such as when they are on vacation. You can define shifts (A is 09:30 - 13:00, B is 11:00 - 13:00), and can specify maximum shifts and double-shifts per week. The minimum staff required for any shift can be specified and, during compilation of the roster, the staff still needed for each shift is displayed, as is the number of shifts and double-shifts each staff member is working. Minimum shift requirements can also be specified, eg. each waiter must work at least 2 Sunday lunches a month, and this can be checked for each waiter while compiling the roster.

Our Review:
Waitrose attempts to tackle the awkward timetabling that must occur when lots of staff are needed round the clock - and does a pretty good job of it. The surprisingly simple interface is simply split up into a number of different input fields, dealing with the required shifts and the waiters' personal availability. The worker's availability is entered using a sort of pseudo-Boolean logic inputs such as 'Only's, 'Can'ts' and 'Away's' which is quite a unique way of doing things and rather effective as well. Although there will inevitably still be problems to iron out later, Waitrose is a great starting point and should prove invaluable to restaurateurs everywhere.
