Ever imagine what would happen if Edward Gorey met Dr. Seuss? The result would probably be something like the rhythmically haunting collection called The Utter Zoo Alphabet. Edward Gorey, a prolific artist, playwright, illustrator, bestowed upon the world liquor-guzzling children, falling and brooding furniture, dancing skeletons, foul-mouthed plants, shadowy oddballs and disaster-prone babies. In this alphabet, Gorey takes on each letter in succession, and unveils a curious creature with a tongue-twisting name.
Our Review: The Utter Zoo Alphabet is an interesting collection of black and white sketches by Edward Gorey. The sketches involve an imaginary animal for each letter of the alphabet. Quite poetic and artistic, with a bit of a humour.
