Instead of relying on technology, Kurt Stepnitz relies on his own clarity of vision to create his magical black and white photographs. He makes his images using only a plastic toy camera, and the challenge of creating artful pictures in this manner is what exhilarates him. This back to basics approach proves fruitful for Stepnitz in his dreamy, naturally lit photos. He offers us glimpses of everyday life but infuses them with an aesthetic understanding. In these works, we see Stepnitz's great eye for composition in the abundant sharp lines and shadows that he captures in his viewfinder. Even the distorted, dark edges caused by inferior optics and soft focus cast an old fashioned glow on the works. Stepnitz's dedication to his toy camera does little to hinder him; in fact, he uses it as an opportunity to explore the subtleties of composition and light in his engaging photographs.
Our Review: This is a 10-day trial of a series of pictures that were artfully taken by Kurt Stepnitz using only a cheap toy camera. They came out very nicely, in black and white, but they have that special touch. They are a little odd in this day and age of color, but very well taken and masterfully composed.
