Alpha has been programmed for students who need a systematic, self-tailored program to help them learn vocabulary. It can help teach vocabulary by allowing you (the student) to create the flashcards and the vocabulary lists. It's easy. First, enter some words into the interface (or open a list created by someone else -- check our online vocabulary list). Then, the computer will ask you about the words that you have entered, until you have really learned them. As you gain proficiency with the questions, Alpha registers this proficiency and quizzes you less frequently on these words.
Alpha's vocabulary lists consist of four possible entries: (1) the meaning of the word in the foreign language, (2) the meaning in your mother tongue, (3) the lesson or page number in your book and (4) a field for additional information (like declension or conjugation, gender, and so on). Also, Alpha stores information about your learning progress.
Alpha allows you to learn your words either in the order you enter them or in random order. It can ask you for words that you frequently mistake or for words you really know well. In addition, there is an option to learn words at a certain level or from a certain lesson.
Finally, you can print out your vocabulary lists (you can print also vocabulary record cards (format A7 and A6) in the registered Mac-Version) or, to keep the quizzes challenging, sort them in several different ways.
Our Review: Alpha (formerly Vocatrainer) supplies a good range of options and testing methods when it comes to learning vocabulary. As well as the ability to create vocab lists and flash cards Alpha will also create some wonderfully flexible exams. These range from testing the words you know, or those you don't, to testing words at a specific level of difficulty. Everything is fully customisable by the user right down to the fonts giving Alpha great potential. Unfortunately the interface isn't as straight-forward as it could have been, and with the large German vocab list provided it suffered from the occasional lock-up. Even so, with some more bug-fixes and the possibility of downloadable vocab lists in the future Alpha can only get better.
