WordSort is a word study educational software program for teaching reading and teaching spelling. Recommended in "Words Their Way", WordSort was originally conceived by the late Dr. Edmund H. Henderson, director of the University of Virginia's McGuffey Reading Center and International Reading Association Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading in 1990. WordSort is also featured in an article by Dr. Jeffrey Cantrell in the September 99 issue of the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy.
WordSort provides exercise in the rapid identification of the different sound/pattern groups, leading to improved phonemic awareness. An early version of WordSort was the subject of an article in Reading Psychology in which it was shown to significantly increase reading comprehension. Our Review: WordSort is a program in which you are given a list of words to sort based on different criteria. It ranges from easy tasks such as sorting pictures that start with the same letter, to the more difficult ones such as sorting words based on their consonant sound. Basic user interface and the use of drag and drop make it easy to use, however, the need to set-up a new file before you start a new round does get quite annoying.
