The Zork & Norkley Assessment Guide will help you determine if a student is acquiring the basic skills necessary for reading. The first part of the assessment evaluates the student's ability to sound out words phonetically. There are 15 nonsense words that include all of the consonants and vowels as well as some common letter combinations (ch, th, etc). Nonsense words are used to make sure that the student is decoding letters and not just repeating words from memory. The second part of the assessment evaluates the student's ability to read sight words.
Our Review: An interesting reading skills program that helps kids both with their phonetic reading and word recognition skills. Nonsensicle words are shown on the screen and then read allowed to teach basic reading recognition skills and then actual words are shown and have to be read out. The documentation goes into more detail over the effectiveness of such a program, and is worth a look for those who want to aid their child's basic reading skills.
