And so it was at the beginning of the 21st Century...
The nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska's Fox Archipelago is attacked and captured by Next Generation Special Forces led by members of FOXHOUND.
The terrorists have got their hands on hundreds of nuclear warheads and they're demanding that the government turn over the remains of Big Boss. They warn that if their demands are not met within 24 hours, they'll launch a nuclear weapon.
Take on the role of retired Special Forces veteran Solid Snake as he is called back into duty in a top-secret mission to deal with the greatest terrorist threat the world has ever seen.
Your mission is to infiltrate the base, rescue the hostages and kill the terrorists carrying nothing but a pair of binoculars, a pack of smokes and a bad attitude. The clock is ticking.
Our Review: Well, what can I say? One of THE most popular PSX games of all time has finally come to PC and everyone's favourite hero, Solid Snake, goes into action alone once more. For those few people who have been living under a rock for the last few years, Metal Gear Solid (MGS) places you, a lone secret agent on an Island in the middle of Alaska tasked with rescuing the hostages, and stopping a nuclear missile launch. You have no weapons, only a pack of cigarettes, a pair of Binoculars, and your bare hands... The graphics are significantly improved over the PSX version, although they haven't changed the text in the opening sequence and it looks quite pixelly. In fact, a lot of the sprites haven't been updated from the PSX version (inventory, etc.) which detracts a little from the whole look of it. The gameplay is the same too - a perfect example of the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' school of thought meaning it should take approximately 2 seconds for PSX veterans to get to grips with the game. If you missed out on MGS on the Playstation, then whatever you do, DON'T miss out on the PC version. It also comes with the plot intro for MGS2: Sons of liberty, so have a look...
