Distant Suns 4 - Download version (for free too!)
It you would like to "try before you buy", please download the Distant Suns 4 "special edition". This is not a crippled demo, but a fully functioning piece of software. The only things missing are those which require the large database available only on CD-ROM such as video files, large images and the 16 million star database. Note that this is nearly 5 Meg in size, so be prepared to wait. This works on both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, meaning that is is only "16 bit" software. If you would like the speed of 32 bits and greater consistency with the Windows interface, you may want to purchase the new Distant Suns 5 package.
Our Review: While not the latest version available, Distant Suns: Special edition is effectively free - which is always nice. What do you get for your no money? Well, you get the best astronomical package available (apart from DS5). The stunning interface lets you explore our solar system in beautiful faux-3D, complete with stars, planets, constellations and comet. Locating planets is a breeze, you can also watch the solar-system go round through the clock controls or find out where Jupiter will be in the sky on the night of Feb 5 2006. Simply brilliant - anything that awes Arthur C Clarke oughta be.
NB. Advanced astronomers will probably want the star database and the other CD-Rom enhancements, but for the rest of us this will do nicely.
