NetNak shows your internet data rate through your modem on a dial-up connection.
The data rate is displayed as both text and on a histogram. The display can be
either as a floating window or a docked window. You also have the option to make
the display unavailable while there is no active connection to monitor.
NetNak can also keep track of your time on-line as well as the total amount of
data you send and receive and the average send and receive data rate. You can
also get a warning if you are about to exceed your preset time on-line or data
limits to help control your internet access costs.
Further to this you can also see your statistics as both text and graphically on
a per month, day, hour and 5 minutely basis so you can see when your internet
connection handles the most and the fastest data, when you are on-line etc.
You can further cut your internet costs by using "Automatic Low Data Hang-up" to
hang up when you are not actually using the internet (but e-mail checkers etc
are keeping your connection alive) or when your internet data speed is too slow.
You can monitor the data through a shared modem from another computer so you can
know how busy the modem.
NetNak will also check your version of Microsoft Dialup Networking and give you
a warning if it is an older version - refer to the "Known Issues" further down
for details on updating Microsoft Dialup Networking.
Our Review: There is nothing less encouraging than an unexpectedly high internet bill - you can try to remember how much of you monthly internet allowance you've used and hope to not exceed it, but really you need some automated way of checking and recording internet usage. NetNak does this - and a whole heap more. NetNak can be configured to track sent and received data and warn you when your data usage gets too high. Time usage can also be monitored in this fashion. Many other features exist to minimize internet-wastage such as the ability to automatically hang-up if data throughput is too low (in the instance of a bad connection or an email program forcing the connection to stay live) and a vividly visible graph that, when conveniently docked at the top of your screen, allows you to see at a glance whether you're wasting your time. A wonderful creation for those stuck with pay-per-view internet connections.
