WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of the RAR archiver - a powerful tool which allows you to create, manage and control archive files. There are several versions of RAR, for a number of operating environments, currently available: RAR for DOS, OS/2, Windows (32-bit), Unix (Linux, BSD, SCO, Sparc and HP-UX) and BeOS.
There are two versions of RAR for Windows:
· Version with graphical user interface - WinRAR.exe;
· Command line console (text mode) version - Rar.exe;
WinRAR features
· Complete support of RAR and ZIP archives;
· Highly sophisticated, original compression algorithm;
· Special multimedia compression algorithm;
Our Review: WinRAR has been largely overshadowed by WinZIP in the mainstream PC archiving arena, but it's really worth a look. When you go to perform an operation (such as creating an archive), it will give you information on the various options available, information that is not as easily available (if at all) with other compression programs. Once you get to grips with how to use the impressive array of functions, WinRAR is very versatile. Although it focuses primarily on the RAR compression format, it does support most other major compression types. One of the main benefits of using RAR compression is that it is a much more multi-platform format than Zip. In addition, the new version has an improved and much nicer GUI, making it easier to use. Excellent product.
