The LanCast system allows network administrators to quickly, easily and securely stream rich media files to all the users on the network. No need to bother with converting files to one format, LanCast will stream any type of file playable with Windows Media Player. Included is the Tools software, which you install on one machine and acts as a server, and the Client software, which you install on other machines, and plays back media.
Our Review: LanCast tools is a great idea that hasn't been very well implemented. The concept is that you set-up an audio-media server somewhere on your network, and then - using the client software - other people in your building can access your songs. It's a similar concept to broadcasting your own private radio station except the users can choose which songs to hear. The problem I had with the implementation is that each song/media file has to be added one-by-one; you can't even just point the server program to the folder that contains the files. Similarly - the client can only play one file at a time - there's no play list. In its current state, LanCast tools would be more useful for simply sharing perhaps a single file such as the recording of a past conference or a lecture. Included in this suite are both the server and client applications - both of which have a 10 minute time limit.
