FilesCollection (FC) is an easy to use multi-featured tool with explorer-like interface which allows you to index the drives (floppy disks, hard drives (including network ones), optical disks, CD-ROMs, ZIP disks and other media), folders and archives on them. With FC you are able to - Index volumes, folders and files;
- Add comment to each file, folder and disk;
- Analyse ZIP, ARJ, RAR, CAB, ARC and etc archives;
- Search for files/folders using file name (with wildcards);
- Search for files in archives;
- Import descriptions from files like "readme.txt", "file_id.diz","files.bbs", "descript.ion" etc.;
- Extract descriptions from MP3 files (ID3 tags etc);
- ... and much more.
FC doesn't use any database engines and so very fast. The database generated by FC is very compact.
Our Review: FilesCollection performs the task of cataloging your directories satisfactorily - but it has few features and struggles to match up to other cataloging utilities already available. It refused to allow me to map an entire network drive, limiting me to just being able to choose one directory within that shared drive. The program creates indexing files that can be searched from within the program but the search is very basic - you can only search by name. Integration is provided with file comments from zip archives and mp3s but that feature has become standard on most good cataloguers out there. An adequate, run-of-the-mill file cataloguer.
