Agent99
Agent99 is a software based burglar alarm which allows you to use your PC and modem to notify you when there's been a break-in. All you need is a PC running Windows 95 or 98 with a sound card, microphone and modem (a voice modem is highly recommended). These are industry standard components which many home PCs already have. Agent99 can monitor your house by listening through the PC microphone. Upon hearing a noise that's louder than the threshold you've set, it will start dialing out. With a minimum of effort, you can also connect up detectors (infra-red, micro/reed/mercury switches, etc) to the PC's joystick port. Agent99 will then get tripped when any one of these devices is activated. Would you like to be called when your home is being broken into? Agent99 can call up to 5 numbers including your work, cell phone, neighbor, etc. When it calls you, by pressing the buttons on your phone, you can choose to listen to the intruders (via a strategicly placed microphone) or de-activate the alarm. Our Review: Agent99 is the result of some smart thinking that takes advantage of your existing PC hardware. Basically put, Agent99 operates as a burglar alarm, but there are various other applications of this great piece of software that you would no doubt find both fun and useful. For instance, you can use it to spy on the babysitter! The interface is a little dull, but that is acceptable since Agent99 is primarily a system tray program and doesn't require any fanciness, only a simple configuration window which it already has. Configuration is easy and options are plentiful - you can set the alarm to activate at a certain time on each separate day, or even alter the alert sounds by replacing the WAV files. Overall, a nice concept developed to a decent level of functionality.
